Kalari expanding into Olympic Dam

Date: 31-Jul-2015

Kalari was recently awarded an important project with BHP Billiton (BHPB), involving haulage of key commodities to BHPB’s Olympic Dam site, located 560 kilometres north of Adelaide, South Australia. The company will commence haulage of a variety of bulk products to Olympic Dam, and return with copper to BHPB’s packing facility in Adelaide in November.

High Volume Operations
BHP Billiton Olympic Dam is a world-class mining and mineral processing operation that has been in production since 1988, producing high-quality copper, uranium, gold and silver. The operation comprises a mechanical underground mine, a copper concentrator, hydrometallurgical plant, copper smelter, and copper and uranium refinery. It is one of South Australia’s leading business enterprises with a significant ore reserve and mining life in excess of 50 years.

Specialised equipment, pneumatic tankers, stainless steel acid tankers and new side tippers will be deployed, servicing this high-volume task in a 24/7 operation. The specialised equipment also includes a unique copper restraint system which allows copper packs to be safely and efficiently loaded and restrained without the use of tie down chains, eliminating manual handling and working at height risks.

Kalari will become a prominent employer within South Australia’s regional areas of Port Pirie, Port Augusta and Roxby Downs, employing approximately 70 operators and other staff.

Recognising safety and operational performance
For over 20 years, Kalari has used specialised equipment to provide safe transport of bulk products from Port Pirie and Adelaide to Olympic Dam.

Safety and operational performance has played a large role in securing these works. The company’s efforts are now focused on a safe and successful implementation of the contract and commencement in November.
